Cervical Osteoarthritis: Understand and Manage

 

Also called cervical spondylosis or arthritis of the neck is a degenerative condition affecting the cervical spine (C1–C7), particularly between C4 and C7 P

. It results from cartilage breakdown, disc dehydration, and bone spur formation—leading to neck pain, stiffness, and potential nerve or spinal cord complications 

 

Common symptoms:

 

  • Neck pain and stiffness, headache, neck noises when turning, and shoulder or chest pain 

  • Nerve-related issues: tingling, numbness, weakness in arms or hands

Causes:

 

  • Aging and natural wear-and-tear of cervical joints and discs 

  • Predispositions: genetics, sedentary lifestyle, neck injuries, smoking, repetitive strain 

Management strategies:

 

  • Conservative treatment including physical therapy, medications, cervical collars 

  • Education about posture, exercises for neck mobility and strength, lifestyle modifications

  • Surgery for severe cases with neurological compromise after failure of conservative measures
