Rhinitis: when the nose becomes fragile

 

 

Introduction

 

Rhinitis is an inflammation of the nasal mucosa. Very common, it can be allergic, infectious (viral or bacterial), or due to chronic irritation.

 

Causes

 

  • Allergic rhinitis: caused by pollen, dust mites, animal hair.

  • Infectious rhinitis: usually due to cold viruses or sometimes bacteria.

  • Irritative rhinitis: pollution, smoke, chemicals.

Symptoms

 

  • Runny or blocked nose

  • Sneezing

  • Itchy nose

  • Reduced sense of smell

Treatment

 

  • Allergic rhinitis: antihistamines, nasal sprays, avoiding allergens.

  • Infectious rhinitis: nasal rinses, rest, hydration, antibiotics if bacterial.

  • Irritative rhinitis: avoid irritants, humidify the air.

Prevention.

 

  • Regular nasal washing with saline solution

  • Limit exposure to allergens

  • Ventilate the home daily
