Conjunctivitis: Types, Causes, Prevention and Treatment
Introduction:
Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the transparent membrane covering the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. It is common and usually mild, but can be very uncomfortable.
1. Types of Conjunctivitis

Viral conjunctivitis

Cause: viruses (often linked to a cold or respiratory infection).

Symptoms: watery discharge, redness, itching.

Contagious: yes.

Allergic conjunctivitis

Cause: allergens (pollen, dust, pet dander).

Symptoms: redness, intense itching, tearing.

Contagious: no.

Bacterial conjunctivitis
-
Cause: bacteria.

Symptoms: redness, yellow or green discharge, eyelids stuck together in the morning.

Contagious: yes.

2. Prevention
-
Wash hands regularly.

Avoid rubbing your eyes.
-
Use disposable tissues.
-
Do not share towels, pillows, or makeup.
3. Treatment

Viral: often resolves on its own within 1–2 weeks, cold compresses for relief.

Allergic: antihistamine eye drops, avoid allergen exposure.

Bacterial: antibiotic eye drops or ointment prescribed by a doctor.
