THE DENGUE

DENGUE – A Growing Threat in the Caribbean

 

Introduction

Dengue, also called "tropical flu", is a viral disease transmitted by Aedes aegypti. Outbreaks are becoming more frequent in the Caribbean.


1. Transmission

The mosquito bites an infected person, then transmits the virus to others. It breeds in stagnant water near homes.

 


2. Symptoms

  • Sudden high fever

  • Headache

  • Muscle and joint pain

  • Skin rash

  • Extreme fatigue

3. Prevention

  • Eliminate standing water

  • Use mosquito nets and repellents

  • Educate communities

 


4. Treatment

No specific antiviral.
Rest, fluids, paracetamol (avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatories).


Conclusion

Dengue is preventable. If we all take action, we can reduce its impact.
